About the Gulf States Quilting
Association (GSQA)
The Gulf States Quilting Association was organized in 1984 to create, stimulate, maintain and demonstrate an
interest in all things relating to quilts and the art of quiltmaking by sponsoring community service endeavors such as
quilting shows, seminars, workshops and lectures. GSQA currently has a membership of over 1300 women and
men. Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in quilts or quiltmaking. GSQA includes a network of
chapters located in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle.
BOARD - Officers are elected on an annual basis, and have Board meetings four times a year.
NEWSLETTER - Members receive a quarterly newsletter, Quilt Talk, which contains information
on all the functions of GSQA.
MEETINGS - GSQA holds quarterly General Meetings for members and guests. These meetings
are held in January, April, July, and October. Their specific times and dates are listed in Quilt Talk
and the website in the Events section. The meetings include a program on quilting, often presented
by national teachers.
BIENNIAL SEMINAR - GSQA has a biennial four-day seminar each Spring of odd numbered
years. The Seminar is held in Baton Rouge and includes classes taught by national and local
teachers.
BIENNIAL QUILT SHOW - GSQA also presents a biennial quilt show on the even numbered
years. This show is generally held in the Greater New Orleans area and includes a chance to win a
beautiful opportunity quilt, designed and made by the members.
PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE CLASSES - GSQA offers free classes throughout the year called
the Pursuit of Excellence (POE). These classes are intended for members who will later take the
lesson learned back to their guilds to share the techniques and ideas they have learned.
CIRCUIT TEACHER PROGRAM - GSQA has a "Circuit Teacher" program in which local
guilds select one of the approved circuit teachers to teach a class in their area. Circuit Teachers
began their year in April. The Board selects teachers and the classes to be presented. Each guild is
provided information in July. There is a nominal fee for each student.
MARION MAERKE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD - Each year GSQA awards a scholarship to
one of our members to attend the Seminar all expenses paid. This is the Marion Maerke Scholarship
Award, named after the founder of GSQA.
MEMBERSHIP IN GSQA - New Members are always welcome and we would like to invite
you to attend one of our functions to get to know us. You can contact any of your local quilt shops
and they should be able to let you know when a function is being held in your area, or check out the
Events portion of the website. If you would like to become a member of GSQA, fill out a
Membership Application Form, and mail it along with your $20 annual dues to the name and
address on the form.
