Folded Fans

From Elsie Campbell’s “String Quilts” book. Dorinda has made five different quilts from this book including her “Folded Fans”, which won “Best of Show” in a regional quilt show Oct. 2010. Book required. Class includes lecture/trunk show/hands-on sewing techniques to effectively use those scraps and strings that seem to multiply so quickly as we make our “planned” quilts. Discuss value, unity, and how to organize and handle those bits and pieces. Discuss finishing options: jagged edges or a rectangle. Additional Scrap Piecing lecture also available.
Jelly Roll Bargello

Create vibrant, fluid pattern in this small quilt. Twenty pre-cut strips are sewn into strata and then cut into segments. Pattern emerges as you manipulate the strips into a design that pleases your eye. Add interest to the double border with a narrow flange. No pattern required . You are the designer! Great use for jelly rolls!

Honeycomb Quilt
From Sara Nephew’s Book “Big Book of Building Block Quilts”. Using strip-piecing, rotary cutting, and stitching the quilt in columns, you can avoid Y-seams. Great study in value, texture, and optical illusions. Use of the equilateral triangle adds a new shape to quilter’s design possibilities. Men LOVE these quilts – The Honeycomb quilt actually tricks your eyes when it is turned upside down! Once students have one set of blocks made, design possibilities and two different edges are explored. Book and ruler required (an investment of about $40). Free short accompanying lecture on additional equilateral triangle ideas available for night before.
Dizzy Diamonds

Available after December 2011: Dorinda’s original design to be published in “Quilter’s World” magazine. Use your scrap strips or Jelly Rolls in a careful positioning of values around a black diamond to create this optical illusion of diamond blocks tumbling toward you off the quilt. Turn the quilt sideways to view columns of color. No Y-seams, easy construction.
Celtic Pillow
Learn a little history of Celtic quilting, explore design possibilities. After tracing design, make bias strips through use of bias bars, appliqué stitch properly with a woven technique to create Celtic block that can be turned into pillow or used in a quilt. Quilting ideas discussed. Great “take-along” project.
