Beginning Hand Appliqué
This may be taught as a one or two day workshop.
One Day - The student may expect to learn:
* The basics of the hand appliqué stitch.
* Freezer paper inside as the method of appliqué.
* An elementary use of color, contrast, and design.
* How to transfer the desired design to the background fabric.
* How to form smooth curves and pointy points (both concave
and convex).
* How to make 1/4" bias in at least two ways, including the use
of bias bars.
Two Day - In addition to all of those things taught in the One Day
Workshop, the student may expect to learn:
* The "Baste from Behind" method of appliqué.
* To make flawless circles.
* A rudimentary use of color, light and shadow in the formation
of an appliqué design.
* The basic skills of modifying a design to fit individual needs.
* The advantages and disadvantages of various forms of hand
appliqué, and their easiest or best application usages.

Intermediate Appliqué
or Developing Appliqué Skills
The student may expect to learn:
* How to design or modify a block(s).
* Classic Needle Turn appliqué and its possible uses.
* About six to eight various kinds of hand appliqué,
along with their potential uses.
* How colors reflect and interact.
* How to form three dimensional blooms and leaves.
* How to ruche.
* How to incorporate stitchery into a block for added
visual interest.
Embellishing Your Quilt
This may be done as a 45 minute presentation to a guild, as well as
in a workshop format. The student may expect to learn:
* What embellishing is and does for our work as quilters.
* How to prepare the fabric to receive embellishments.
* How to do various stitches in floss, including straight stitch, lazy
daisy stitch, French knots, fern stitch, and chevron stitch.
* How to prepare silk ribbon for embroidery.
* How to stitch with silk ribbon including stitches covered in floss,
spider roses, and ruching.
* What ribbon floss is and how to use it.
* When and how to apply buttons, beads, and findings.
* How to apply beads, whether singly, in hanging strands, or in
loops.
* Possible resources for threads, ribbons, beads, etc.
* How to use paints, pens, and colored pencils to enhance or
embellish.
Color for Quilters in Appliqué and Piecing
(This may be done as a 45 minute presentation
to a guild, as well as in a workshop format.)
The student may expect to learn:
* What colors mean to us.
* To differentiate which colors appeal to them
most.
* What a background does in influencing or
directing the “feel” of a quilt or block.
* To disregard some of the rules or limits
placed on them by others (or even
themselves!).
* How to combine color(s) in a way which
pleases them.
* What it means to “play well with others” or
“be a good neighbor” in the color world.
* Which colors interact well together and why.
The student will have hands on, interactive time
with tools that will help her/him develop some
sense of what works for her/him. In doing so,
the person will learn to build a block with
design elements, seeing the result of added
color(s).
